A nurse, learning that I am married, remarked “You must be a good husband because you are quiet”.
1) Sound is not a requirement for language
2) ASL can be “loud”

Agreed. Some hearing people who have never heard of Deaf culture are not aware that deaf people, indeed, do have intonations and facial expressions,
body language, the eye movements.
Aside from above, I have observed that the eyes of deaf people are much more expressive than those of hearing people. It is a small wonder that hearing babies are much more fascinated with deaf people’s expressive eyes which instantly win their love for deaf people.

Tayler-
Have you thought about asking the nurse why she thought you were quiet person? I thought it would be great if you asked her about it because who knows you could have used the oppportunity to educate her about our culture and language rather than making guesses here. I am only making suggestion. I am not here to critcize you.

Hi Penny. As I said in the vlog, shortly after the nurse said that, I was rushed off to see the doctor. Even if I had the time, I was kind of taken aback by what she said and needed to process it. As we see above, there are a few interpretations of what she said. If I’d said something right then, it may have been the wrong response.
I think what I said, “She’s deaf, too!” (referring to my wife) was a very good response. Hopefully it showed her that we can communicate equally.
