    Hello everyone. I’m surprised with how long we’ve been discussing subtitling vlogs on DeafRead. We had the same discussion on DeafRead a year ago. At that time, I wrote a post, Vlog captioning is translation, about another subtitling challenge (on top of technical knowledge, access to software, and having the time to do subtitles). When subtitling a vlog, translation is involved.

    When a company does subtitling for a person speaking in English, it’s straight transfer from spoken English to written English. This isn’t translation.

    When vlogs signed in ASL are subtitled, words are translated from one language to another. This can be a daunting challenge. I know it is for me.

    From the vlogger’s perspective, ask yourself: who do you want to reach? How many people do you want to reach? If you want to have the largest audience as possible: the more options that are given, the more people can follow your vlog. On the other hand, if your intended audience are ASL signers, leave it at that.

    When I make posts on DeafRead Official Blog, I try to make a vlog and include a full transcription. I believe this is the best solution, bringing the most accessibility with the least time and energy. Recently, when subtitling a vlog, I stopped one-eighths through the 5 minute video. I aborted this effort because if I had went on with it, it would’ve taken 2 hours. I simply do not have the time. And the same is true for many of you.

    One thing DeafRead is guilty of is not providing a DeafBlind friendly design. Our designer has been busy with his own projects. At the least, DeafRead is not terrible for DeafBlind visitors. It’s not the best, but it’s not the worst. Screenreaders, which is software that makes their screen more readable, are available to DeafBlind web surfers. DeafRead has several DeafBlind bloggers that continue to visit the website.

    I support the most accessibility possible on vlogs, however ultimately it should be up to the vloggers. Everyone should try their best! Thanks for your time.

    I agree that it is ULTIMATELY up to each vlogger.

    I agree that subtitling is optional.

    However, I believe that transcripts should be given as common courtesty.

    Not asking people to write a BOOK…a paragraph or 2-3 sentences would do…

    Not only for the deaf-blind, but folks like me who are good at ASL or enjoy ASL vlogs. Sometimes I don’t want to sit thru 3-4 mins..sometimes I just want to see a summary…

    Just what I think…:-)

    Just My thought suggestion:
    Let everyone know about provide subtitles.. If whoever wish add their subtitles.. That’s fine as long their choice.
